Sunset Lake Watercolor

Experimenting with reflections. I’m finding that paper matters. I’ve been using Canson all this time and have been having a hard time with it drying quickly or not getting the blending or water to behave. I thought it was me until I bought Arches and everything seems to work better for me. Has anyone else noticed this?

  1. OH YES! sorry, didn’t mean to shout…..lol but it is so true…..I hate Canson paper with a passion but there is a new paper that Canson makes that is a very good paper (can’t believe that I am saying this!) but it is called L’Aquarelle Canson Heritage, it runs over $7 a sheet for 140#. I will not paint on nothing but good quality artist paper, believe me, you’ll never go back. 🙂

    • Thank you Margaret for the info. I was buying the cheap paper from WalMart because I’m so new and just learning. If/when I get better, then I’ll buy the really good quality paper. I actually bought the Arches by accident online – I thought it was the cheap stuff. 🙂

  2. Hi Carol, At the moment I am waiting for my Canson to dry after putting a wash on it. So yes I am finding the same thing. Recently I bought some Fabriano 140lb hot press that I need to try. Also everyone swears by Arches which I am itching to try. Paper does matter. I started with inexpensive equipment, brushes, paper and paints and quickly learned one must have quality to get quality results. Cheers Susan 🙂

  3. Ohh yes I agree with you completely. The same thing happened with me, I stopped using that paper. It affects your output. Arches is always better than anything, currently I’m using Bee Paper and Fluid watercolor papers for my 100 day’s project, as they are really good quality in economic price.
By the way I really loved the reflection, very nice!

  4. ‘Sunset Lake Watercolor’….beautiful work Carol…those colors really work for me. I really like Arches paper. I just had a very bad experience with Derwent Watercolor paper and will not be using that brand ever again.
The Canson (Master series) papers I have been using seem to be alright …but, I am just starting out and have a tendency to think it’s me when things don’t work out…..lol.

    • I’m not familiar with Derwent watercolor paper but then again, I’m learning about everything. I’m afraid of Canson and will not be buying it again. I like Arches. I also have Strathmore which seems to behave similar to Arches but I’m thinking the difference is due to my limited abilities. 🙂
